Skagit Roofing began as a one-person company when a young roofer from Burlington, Washington left a managing position in a local roofing firm to strike out on his own. Jim Hjelt grew up in construction, moving around the country with his parents while his father, Dick Hjelt, was an estimator and project manager for Bechtel Corporation, later making Burlington the family hometown in 1973.
Jim’s first day of roofing as a teenager, in the late 70’s, had him carrying bundles of cedar shakes up the ladder and by the end of the week he began installing those shakes alongside seasoned, old-school roofers.
1990 marked the beginning year of Skagit Roofing when 29-year-old Jim, with over 10 years of experience, literally hung out his shingle.
By 2015, Skagit Roofing had grown and Jim had the great fortune to recruit Ty Price to assist in management. Ty is a natural manager, fantastic salesperson and had the talent to take Skagit Roofing to the next level. Ty is now the general manager, assisted by Aryn Sherman, as the award-winning team that is now Skagit Roofing. Jim is still involved as Director and meets daily with the management team and crews.
Jim and Ty’s combined experience of over 70 years continues to nurture top notch crews and provide caring, personal service for our clients.
